Abstract

Las microalgas son los organismos marinos más interesantes y diversos. La ventaja de trabajar con estos organismos es que se puede inducir la producción de metabolitos de interés mediante la modificación de las condiciones de crecimiento. En este sentido, los esfuerzos por incrementar la productividad de los cultivos de microalgas se han centrado principalmente en la mejora de los fotobiorreactores, mientras que se ha dedicado poca atención a los requerimientos nutricionales de las microalgas con el fin de lograr cultivos de alta densidad celular. En este contexto, el objetivo de la presente Tesis fue mejorar la producción de biomasa de la microalga marina Tetraselmis suecica y lograr una alta densidad celular en el estado estacionario de un cultivo semicontinuo. Para ello, se adicionó magnesio, silicio y estroncio en concentraciones de 0.01 a 10 mM; en consecuencia se incrementó la producción de compuestos bioactivos, tanto mediante la modificación del medio (adicionando estroncio 10 mM) como del volumen del cultivo (reactores con volumen de operación de 80 mL, 5 L y 80 L). A partir de la biomasa producida en esas condiciones se evaluó el potencial antioxidante de extractos de T. suecica utilizando métodos de actividad antirradical (DPPH, TEAC y FRAP) y de protección de la peroxidación de lípidos (TBARS y blanqueamiento del β-caroteno); además determinó el contenido de pigmentos y α-tocoferol. En este sentido, se observó que el escalado del cultivo favorece el potencial antioxidante, más no la productividad de biomasa.
