Estimaciones de carga y estructura vertical de formaciones de matorral a partir de mediciones de obstrucción visual en campo

Abstract

La estructura de las formaciones de matorral propensas al fuego, definida por factores como su altura, distribución de cargas por estado vegetativo (vivo-muerto) y fracciones de tamaño, o la densidad aparente, desempeña un papel fundamental en el comportamiento del fuego, afectando a variables como la velocidad de propagación o la intensidad lineal. Las metodologías habituales de estimación de la estructura vertical de complejos de combustible se basan en muestreos destructivos o sensores remotos como el láser escáner terrestre, siendo laboriosas y/o costosas y, por ello, de difícil implementación a gran escala. En este trabajo se describe una técnica de campo robusta y no destructiva para estimar la estructura del complejo de combustible basada en la obstrucción visual de una banda graduada colocada verticalmente en el mismo. La metodología se aplica a 55 parcelas en formaciones de Ulex europaeus, Ulex gallii, Erica australis y Pterospartum tridentatum. A partir de observaciones sencillas se obtuvieron métricas usadas posteriormente como variables independientes para ajustar un sistema de ecuaciones de estimación de cargas por fracciones y estado vegetativo. Esta metodología puede utilizarse también para evaluar la biomasa, el stock de carbono o la densidad y estructura del matorral como hábitat de fauna.
