Abstract

Los eucaliptos son árboles, arbustos o subarbustos nativos de Australia e islas adyacentes, pertenecientes a la familia Myrtaceae, subfamilia Leptospermoideae, Tribu Eucalypteae. La tribu incluye los géneros Allosyncarpia, Angophora, Arillastrum, Corymbia, Eucalyptopsis, Eucalyptus y Stockwellia. La posición del opérculo (solo o doble) cubriendo los brotes florales, y la falta de pétalos durante la antesis, distingue a los eucaliptos dentro de la familia Myrtaceae (Granados-Sánchez & López-Ríos, 2007). En términos generales, en la actualidad, se considera que los eucaliptos comprenden especies que pertenecen a los géneros Angophora, Corymbia y Eucalyptus (Ladiges & Udovicic 2000, Steane et al., 2002). Aunque no existe un consenso universal sobre su clasificación taxonómica, la que proponemos es la más ampliamente aceptada; también existe una clasificación alternativa en la que los tres géneros se engloban en Eucalyptus en sentido amplio, pero no es muy aceptada.
