Abstract

El astigmatismo es un error refractivo que afecta la visión debido a irregularidades en la córnea o el cristalino, resultando en una imagen borrosa o distorsionada. Esta condición presenta multitud de opciones de clasificación. La etiología del astigmatismo es compleja, se estudia la existencia de una combinación de factores genéticos, ambientales y fisiológicos que contribuyen a su desarrollo. A lo largo de la historia, figuras como la de Thomas Young, George Airy o William Whewell han servido de ayuda para entender y corregir el astigmatismo. Aunque a día de hoy, siguen existiendo numerosas incógnitas sobre este error refractivo. La detección y medición del astigmatismo se llevan a cabo mediante métodos subjetivos y objetivos, como la refracción subjetiva, la queratometría, la topografía corneal, la retinoscopía y en algunos casos la oftalmoscopía. La ley de Javal, junto con la queratometría, conforman una herramienta clave para estimar el astigmatismo total a partir de la curvatura corneal. Lo cual siempre es muy útil, especialmente en casos donde los métodos subjetivos fallan. Las opciones de corrección del astigmatismo incluyen lentes oftálmicas, lentes de contacto y cirugía refractiva. Cada una de ellas, se evalúa en función de su efectividad y adecuación al grado de astigmatismo presente en el paciente. Estos métodos permiten mejorar significativamente la calidad de vida de las personas afectadas.
