Abstract

En España conviven distintas comunidades que se comunican en variedades lingüísticas tamén diferentes. Algúns consideran que o que falan é unha lingua, mentres que outros o chaman dialecto. A diferenza entre lingua e dialecto é un dos temas sobre os que aínda os lingüistas non se puxeron de acordo, non existen criterios aceptados pola comunidade científica para distinguilos. Desde un punto de vista lingüístico, un dialecto non pode ser considerado a versión reducida ou imperfecta dunha lingua. Sírvanos para ilustrar a discusión as palabras de Ramón de Andrés: “As dificultades da lingüística -ou as súas renuncias a favor de criterios sociolóxicos ou políticos para definir os conceptos de lingua e dialecto débense a unha falta de coherencia na aplicación do principio de inmanencia glotolóxica. A dicotomía lingua / dialecto, entendida no seu estrito valor glotolóxico, ten utilidade taxonómica, na clasificación das maneiras de falar en conxuntos e subconxuntos; para iso ha de valerse exclusivamente de ferramentas glotolóxicas, que son os trazos lingüísticos ou isoglosas. Doutra banda, lingua “conxunto” / dialecto “subconxunto” tamén constitúe un fenómeno de natureza sociolóxica: neste caso son os falantes (non os lingüistas) os que fan as súas clasificacións. Ambos os planos, o glotolóxico e o sociolóxico, deben ser atendidos debidamente, pero sen mesturalos. Son particularmente interesantes os casos en que o lingüista, glotoloxicamente, chega a constatacións diferentes das que o falante, socioloxicamente, obtén”. (Contextos, XV/29-30, 1997, páx. 67)
