Abstract

Deporte y dopaje han ido de la mano desde tiempos inmemoriales. Las sustancias y los métodos empleados por los deportistas para mejorar su rendimiento han ido variando y evolucionando a lo largo de años y años de competición y, a pesar de que también lo han hecho las técnicas de control anti-doping, aún siguen sin detectarse una gran parte de casos. Asimismo, el desarrollo de la ingeniería genética y de la terapia génica ha abierto la puerta a un amplio abanico de posibilidades que permiten la perpetuación de esta práctica en los próximos años: a través de la inyección de material genético en el músculo se ha conseguido la síntesis de determinadas proteínas involucradas en una mejora de las habilidades atléticas. La amenaza de la manipulación del genoma de los atletas, unida a la ausencia de tecnología capaz de identificarla, han degenerado en una profunda preocupación entre los representantes de las principales federaciones deportivas, pues los procedimientos de alteración de genes aún se encuentran en fase experimental y únicamente se contemplan en un contexto de enfermedad potencialmente mortal, resistente a todas las opciones terapéuticas disponibles. Con todo ello, el impacto que el dopaje genético puede tener sobre la salud física y psíquica de los competidores no puede justificarse con la victoria
