Participación de la inmunidad innata en la progresión del queratocono: estudio tisular en queratoconos unilaterales

Abstract

El queratocono (QC) es una enfermedad progresiva que afecta a adultos jóvenes produciendo discapacidad visual, con gran impacto socio-sanitario y sin tratamiento médico. Tanto la etiología como los factores que condicionan su progresión, siguen sin estar claros. Estudios previos demostraron la implicación de los mecanismos de inflamación en la patogenia y progresión de la ectasia. Debido a ello, postulamos que la inmunidad innata puede estar implicada en el inicio y progresión del QC. El objetivo principal de la tesis fue demostrar, a nivel tisular (epitelio conjuntival y corneal), en pacientes con QC unilateral, la posible participación de la inmunidad innata en la patogenia del QC y su relación con la aparición y progresión del mismo; estudiando los niveles de los receptores toll-like-2 (TLR2) y toll-like-4 (TLR4). Los resultados demuestran que los niveles de TLR2 y TLR4 en células epiteliales de córnea y conjuntiva están mayormente expresados en QC que en subclínicos y controles, demostrando la posible implicación de la inmunidad innata en la fisiopatología del QC.
