Burnout en profesionales de la salud del Ecuador

Abstract

Uno de los grupos de mayor riesgo para desarrollar síndrome de burnout es el constituido por el personal sanitario. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la prevalencia del burnout y de sus dimensiones, así como los factores asociados en profesionales de enfermería y de medicina de las instituciones de salud de las 24 provincias de Ecuador. Se seleccionó una muestra de 2404 profesionales de salud (68.4% mujeres, media de edad = 40.0 años). Se emplearon distintos instrumentos para recoger información sobre sus características sociodemográficas, laborales y clínicas (síndrome de burnout, malestar emocional, personalidad, apoyo social y afrontamiento). Se encontró una prevalencia de 36.4% para el síndrome de burnout. Respecto a las dimensiones del burnout, se halló una prevalencia de 17.6% para el elevado cansancio emocional, 13.6% para la elevada despersonalización y 18.2% para la baja realización personal en el trabajo). Presentaron mayor riesgo de burnout los profesionales con ingresos mensuales de $1000 o más; el personal médico; aquellos con jornadas laborales de más de ocho horas diarias; los que atienden más de 17 pacientes al día; los que trabajaban por turnos; aquellos con síntomas somáticos y de ansiedad, neuroticismo y psicoticismo. Los resultados revelan la necesidad de desarrollar servicios preventivos y de tratamiento del burnout para este sector de la población.
