Funciones de la indumentaria en la picaresca

Abstract

Resulta aventurado añadir algo más sobre las funciones de la indumentaria en la picaresca después de las excelentes investigaciones de Encarnación Juárez Almendros sobre la importancia del vestido en las narrativas autobiográficas del Siglo de Oro y también de Carmen Bernís sobre la historia de la indumentaria española1. Encarnación Juárez recoge los distintos postulados teóricos para el estudio de la indumentaria: la teoría de la imitación, por cuanto que con frecuencia el vestido es una de las maneras que adoptan las clases sociales inferiores para emular a las clases sociales superiores e incluso entrar en ellas; las teorías semiológicas que encuentran en el vestido un código de signos, como la aproximación estructuralista de Roland Barthes, que considera la ropa un sistema al que se podría aplicar una oposición similar a la de lengua y habla de Saussure, de manera que la ropa sería equiparable a la lengua y el vestido individualizado correspondería al habla; las teorías psicoanalíticas que estudian los desplazamientos del cuerpo a la ropa para recargarla de libido y de neurosis, de manera que la vestimenta sería un segundo cuerpo que resulta del cuerpo natural; finalmente las teorías materialistas que atienden al valor mercantil de la ropa y su uso como forma de pago o de regalo en la época pre-moderna.
