El olfato como biomarcador predictivo de enfermedades neurodegenerativas

Abstract

Trabajo fin de Máster de Formación Permanente en Rinología Avanzada y Base de Cráneo Anterior (2022-23). Tutora: Dra. Dª. Mª Amparo Callejón Leblic. La alteración del olfato se ha propuesto como una afectación no motora precoz de algunas enfermedades neurodegenerativas, presentándose años antes del deterioro cognitivo. En la presente revisión se ha realizado una búsqueda sistemática de artículos que estudian la relación entre la pérdida de olfato y el diagnóstico de distintas enfermedades neurodegenerativas, como son la enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA), enfermedad de Parkinson (EP), esclerosis múltiple (EM) y esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA). Se han revisado los resultados de un total de 27 artículos, 15 de ellos transversales, 6 de cohortes y 6 metaanálisis que han evaluado el olfato mediante tests validados, confirmándose su alteración precoz, sobre todo de la identificación, en estas enfermedades. En conclusión, el estudio del olfato se puede considerar una buena herramienta para el screening de diversas enfermedades neurodegenerativas, ayudando a identificarlas, diagnosticarlas y a establecer su pronóstico.
