Abstract

[ENG]Due to the increase in health care waste due to COVID-19, the different Autonomous Communities were forced to take different measures to deal with the management of this waste. In the first instance, the Spanish Government published an Order explaining how the different communities could manage the waste. However, some communities such as Asturias, the Basque Country, Galicia, Madrid and the Valencian Community, among others, published their own decrees to deal with the management of health care waste in contact with the COVID-19. For its part, the Region of Murcia, not having its own waste law regulating how health care waste should be managed, relied exclusively on what was dictated by the Spanish State. On the other hand, due to the lack of data provided by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, it was not possible to carry out an exhaustive analysis of how this community carried out the management of health care waste, so it was decided to make a comparison with the Autonomous Community of Valencia. From this comparison, some points for improvement emerged that could be applied, such as, for example, that the Region of Murcia publishes its own waste regulations, that both regions improve the publicity of the data provided by the regional government and, finally, given the information obtained from the surveys carried out with students and health workers, improve their training in the area of waste management. Lastly, following the analysis of the management of the different autonomous communities, the communities that stand out most for their integrated management of healthcare waste, as well as for their transparency in providing data for the analysis, were Principality of Asturias, Basque Country and Catalonia.
