Abstract

Exchange control is a measure of exchange rate policy adopted by the Government of Venezuela in February of 2003 establishing a fixed exchange rate system between the bolivar, the Venezuelan currency, and the United States dollar. This measure was assumed to be temporar y due to the political and economic al crisis that what taking place in the country; however, far from being a temporary measure this system has been working in Venezuela for the last 11 years and remains in force today. This research analyzes the effect from the fixed exchange rate system in Venezuela on the production of food, apparel and motor vehicles, via the real exchange rate. An autoregressive model with exogenous variables and an error correction term is estimated for each of these three sectors, finding a negative and statistically significant effect on the production of food and apparel but not for the vehicles industry
