[ENG] For construction of 16th century stone domes and sail vaults, both defined by spherical surface, Renaissance master masons put into practice an ingenious geometric procedure, substituting truncated cones for sphere portions that were developed in order to obtain patterns for carving voussoirs (Palacios [1990] 2003 pp.188-195, Rabasa 1996; Rabasa 2000 pp.160-183). However, the stereotomy of sail vault poses an added difficulty in comparison with the dome: the carving of pendentives, in particular the voussoirs located at the intersection of the vault and the wall arches, that need to be dressed using special templates. This paper studies the main solutions for sail vaults featuring round courses in the manuscript of Vandelvira, paying particular attention to the geometric process used in the construction of the templates for pendentive voussoirs, pointing out some minor but significant details such as compass marks, that may cast new light over these issues.
