Abstract

A associação entre mordida cruzada posterior e os distúrbios temporomandibulares é controversa na literatura ao longo do tempo. Uma oclusão normal é fundamental para o equilíbrio do aparelho estomatognático. As más oclusões podem resultam de anormalidades do crescimento e do desenvolvimento e podem constituir uma influência negativa sobre os músculos da mastigação e sobre as estruturas da articulação temporomandibular, potenciando o desenvolvimento de distúrbios temporomandibulares. A literatura, sugere a existência de mecanismos de proteção nas crianças que impedem o surgimento de sintomatologia articular e muscular.
