Abstract

Os pigmentos naturais têm sido, cada vez mais, alvo de estudo pelas suas propriedades corantes e consequentes efeitos benéficos para a saúde. De facto, as indústrias alimentar, farmacêutica e cosmética procuram utilizar os pigmentos naturais em detrimento dos comumente usados (sintéticos), não só pelos seus benefícios como também no sentido de minimizar o impacto ambiental negativo que os corantes sintéticos podem provocar. Os corantes naturais assumem grande importância para a indústria farmacêutica por estarem associados a diversas propriedades biológicas. Os seus efeitos benéficos estão relacionados com a capacidade de certos pigmentos naturais apresentarem propriedades antioxidantes, proteção contra danos oxidativos em componentes celulares, efeitos anti-inflamatórios e prevenção de doenças crónicas não-transmissíveis. Este trabalho de revisão bibliográfica tem como objetivo caracterizar e descrever os efeitos dos pigmentos naturais (clorofilas, carotenoides, betalaínas e flavonoides) presentes no reino vegetal, na sua integração na indústria farmacêutica.
