Atividade antimicrobiana de óleos essenciais

Abstract

Desde a descoberta dos microrganismos como agentes causadores de doenças no Homem que vários estudos foram levados a cabo com o objetivo de descobrir novas formas de os combater. A introdução de compostos com atividade antimicrobiana marcou uma nova era no combate a doenças o que permitiu a redução da mortalidade e morbilidade, mas o seu consumo intensivo rapidamente conduziu ao aparecimento de resistências. A falta de soluções perante a patogenicidade dos microrganismos impulsionou o estudo de novas alternativas. Os óleos essenciais que contêm uma variedade de compostos voláteis, como terpenos e fenóis, são conhecidos pelas suas propriedades anti – sépticas e medicinais, usados como antimicrobianos, analgésicos, sedativos e anti – inflamatórios. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana de 20 óleos essenciais contra bactérias Gram – positivas e Gram – negativas (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) e leveduras do género Candida (C. albicans ATCC 10231, C. krusei ATCC 6258 e Candida parapsilosis ATCC 2209).
