The skin is the largest organ of the human body also being the most susceptible organ lesions that allow limiting the quality of life of a patient, so the chronic wounds are increasingly being witnessed. To counteract this consequence tissue engineering has emerged that allows the deployment of skin substitutes like human skin, by developing supports that are called for scaffolds that can be of biological or synthetic origin. Associating these supports stem cell mesenchymal and an extracellular matrix can regenerate damaged tissue or get a new skin tissue. In this literature review paper describes the concept and basic technique of tissue engineering; cells and biomaterials used in skin substitutes; the constitution of the skin and the healing of chronic wounds and finally the products marketed biological skin substitutes.
