Objective: To verify the validity of single breath counting (SBC) in the clinical practice in the determination of the slow expiratory vital capacity (SEVC) thought the correlation between SEVC with spirometry and SBC. Methodology: Includes 50 individuals, students from University Fernando Pessoa, which were randomly submitted to review of SEVC and SBC. Results: There was an agreement between the two tests, was obtained one strong correlation between both, r = 0,902. When compared smokers and non-smokers the correlation was r = 0,842 and r = 0,902, for individuals which practice physical activity, former individuals which practice physical activity for more than a year, and never practiced physical activity, the correlation was r = 0,968, r = 0,977 and r = 0,871, respectively. Conclusion: The strong correlation between two variables suggests that the evaluation of SEVC may be replaced in clinical practice by SBC.
