Meningites microbianas

Abstract

Meningitis corresponds to an inflammation of the meninges, mainly caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. The risk of contracting the disease is high in the early years of life, low at school age, increasing again in adolescence and early adulthood. This risk also increases in immunocompromised individuals. In the past, this disease caused death of most patients or left neurological sequelae in patients who survived. With the deeper understanding of this pathology, the development of diagnostic techniques and the development of antibiotics and vaccines, the rate of mortality and sequelae decreased, allowing patients to a better quality of life.
