Bruxismo do sono em crianças

Abstract

This dissertation consists in a bibliographic review of bruxism as a generic subject, well as a systematic review of sleep bruxism in children, for the last 10 years, using PubMed. For this thesis, the following key-words (for the bibliographic review) were used: Bruxism, Children, Parassomnias, Sleep Disorders, Parafunctional Habits, Temporomandibular disorders, Sleep Physiology; whereas for the systematic review, the following key-words were used: Sleep Bruxism [MESH] AND Children [MESH.]. Sleep Bruxism is defined as the grinding of the teeth, related to an involuntary movement of the jaw that happens throughout the night. It is normally included in the Parassomnias movement group of Sleep Disorders, and it might also be considered a parafunctional habit predisposed of the Temporomandibular Disorders. It is a very frequent pathology which can occur at any time in a person’s life, although it’s more prevalent in children. Parassomnias can be considered as part of the physiologic process of sleep maturation and as a result are nearly non-existing from birth to 2 years, reaching a maximum at the 2-5 years stage, decreasing throughout childhood until puberty, with the possibly of rekindling at adult age. In what concerns the etiology of Bruxism, studies prove that its derivation from a confluence of numerous factors: oclusal factors, behaviour related parameters, systematic pathologies, just as sleep disorders. There is not a definitive treatment for Bruxism, being the diminishing of the consequences caused just as halting the progression of the pathology the main objectives. It is important that the Dentist bears ample knowledge, in this area, so that he might diagnose this condition as early as possible and acts accordingly.
