Abstract

In a globalized and cultural and affective loss context, the elderly population, which has increased in developed countries, has shown multiple needs occasioned by the abandonment and abuse in hostile environments, accompanying the exodus of the population from the interior to big cities. Having lost all reference and symbolic power as household providers, today’s elders, as remainders of society, are lonely and abused, whilst losing their quality of life in an irrecoverable way. This study aims at the sociological object of the elderly population at risk and at a group of variables which interfere with its definition. It starts by raising some issues which need an immediate response: how to humanize these 3rd and 4th ages which have become more and more aggressive from a human and social point of view? How to define abuses and how to identify them? How to prevent them? How to provide our elders a gratifying quality of living? Through different models and an exhaustive conceptual framework, this study upholds a strong theoretical component from a methodological point of view. It is based on bibliographical and digital research, and focuses on the worldwide reality as well as on the Portuguese one. The legislation used in elderly abuse cases was also studied in the last part of the work. The conclusion emphasises the role of training of the social technicians directly involved in caring for the elderly, as well as the need to create conditions so that this stage of life can be lived as useful and productive as possible.
