Green open innovation

Abstract

Innovation is a fundamental driver of competitive advantage for firms willing to address contemporaneously economic, environmental, and social issues. With the current climate emergency, an innovation that reduces the impact of economic activities on nature – i.e. green innovation – is particularly urgent and needed. Because of the higher complexity of knowledge and the crucial role of stakeholders, green innovation poses additional challenges to the usual difficulties of the innovation process. This book illustrates that an open innovation approach may help in this challenge. An extended literature review outlines almost 20 years of research on the embryonic field of green open innovation. The more open nature of green innovation in comparison to other innovation is tested in a novel application. The author discusses the implications of a green open innovation approach and she proposes future avenues of research that support the management of green innovation with an open mode.
