Abstract

Dropout rates are becoming an educational emergency and schools are increasingly having to deal with it. NEETS – young people who are “Not in Education, Employment or Training” – have now become a widespread phenomenon representing a sense of alienation and suffering typical of teenagers’ life nowadays. Schools, universities and sector-specific associations are still able to provide services and research or training projects in order to reduce the dropout risk within the educational framework. This paper presents some projects carried out in the last few years, focusing on expressive and performing arts workshops – a type of language which is able to fascinate and engage young people who are going through a difficult period in life. Art speaks a language which is natural to teenagers and enables them to express themselves and help each other by sharing their sense of fragility. They can work together in a protected environment where they are fully monitored and can interact with local communities in dedicated spaces. By using meditation and contemplation techniques in a playful way they can share experiences without being obsessed by the need to produce or consume at all costs. Hopefully this will help them rediscover the pleasure of making plans and acting in the world without anxiety and pressure from the outside.
