Abstract

Abstract: The essay reconstructs the genesis, structure, and impact of the first Italian retrospective devoted to Iranian cinema, organized in 1990 by the Pesaro International New Cinema Festival under the directorship of Adriano Aprà. Analyzing the geopolitical and institutional context that made the event possible, the text highlights the crucial role of the Farabi Cinema Foundation, the Fajr Film Festival, and other Iranian governmental bodies in the international promotion of the post-revolutionary “new cinema.” Through an examination of paratextual materials and curatorial dynamics, it shows how the Pesaro retrospective—though the outcome of complex diplomatic negotiations—managed to enact a strategic selection that foregrounded distinctive authorial voices (Kiarostami, Makhmalbaf, Naderi) and activated a critical discourse centered on “solitude” and “redemption” as recurrent categories in festival reception. The essay concludes by reflecting on how international festivals contribute to the symbolic construction of “other” cinemas, showing how Pesaro transformed an operation conducted by institutions oriented “within the norm” into a device of selective and cultural recognition “outside the norm.”
