Abstract

Unos años luego de haber llegado a Bolivia para probar suerte en la in dustria del caucho, Ernst Leutenegger inspecciona una barraca perdida en el río Geneshuaya. Al caminar por la selva percibe algo extraño entre los matorrales. Se sorprende al comprobar que se trata de un periódico sucio y arrugado. Le informan que, como no ha habido ningún otro blan co en la zona, seguramente el papel haya sido dejado por Franz Ritz, otro suizo que pasó por allí unos meses antes. Este pequeño episodio bien puede parecer trivial, pero nos ofrece una buena oportunidad de enlazar las vidas de dos figuras importantes aunque no tan conocidas de la era cauchera. Es que Franz Ritz y Ernst Leutenegger no sólo compartieron la nacionalidad suiza. Compartieron, también, una época decisiva para la historia del Oriente boliviano y para Bolivia en general, y al mismo tiempo ideales, intereses, preocupaciones, una profesión, una cierta sen sibilidad, lugares de esparcimiento y hasta un círculo social. Pero no sólo eso. Ambos trabajan en la misma barraca, Almendros, con tan sólo ocho meses de diferencia: Ritz navega y compra la goma del establecimien to, Leutenegger lo administra. Y ambos, por motivos que apenas cabe sospechar, deciden narrar sus aventuras en la selva boliviana en sendos relatos de viaje. Son estos textos, justamente, los que aquí reproducimos traducidos por primera vez al castellano. Para presentarlos es preciso re cordar brevemente la historia del auge cauchero en la Amazonía bolivia na, repasar luego lo poco que sabemos de la biografía de ambos autores y finalmente proponer algunas pistas comparativas para emprender una lectura cruzada de sus respectivos textos.
