Abstract

The review of the book that collects the proceedings of the international conference of Arcavacata (14-16 April 2010) provides an opportunity to take stock of twenty years of studies about Gianfranco Contini’s critical-philological career, the highlights of which, in addition to the conference in Calabria, are the workshops held in Venice in October 2000 and in Naples in December 2002 and the two monographic issues of «Ermeneutica Letteraria», the 2010 and 2011 booklets, with a focus on the Letter sections which open new horizons about his hermeneutic practice. Prompted by the concurrence and interaction of his two souls, the philologist and the expert in contemporary literature, the book with the Arcavacata proceedings is testament to the broad range of the critic’s interests, through a review of his studies on novels and poetry in the Italian scenario as well as the European dimension of his exploratory work ; at the same time, this paper gives prominence to the uniqueness and effectiveness of a method based on the systematic harmonisation of philological tools and critical understanding.
