The aim of this article is to set the working of censorship at the center of an interpretation of European modernity and to see how much the control by the traditional agencies on the circulation of ideas has changed - by a process of constitutionalization - along the Old Regime and the enlightened era - and to find out the new forms of communication have emerged.
