El presente estudio analiza la evolución del hábito de fumar y de las variables rela- cionadas con el deseo de abandonar el consumo de tabaco en dos muestras de fumadores tomadas con 5 años de diferencia y evaluadas con la misma encuesta. Participaron como sujetos un total de 187 fumadores (edad promedio 34 años, rango 14-84) en la muestra evaluada en 1993 y un total de 196 fumadores (edad promedio 32 años, rango 17-75) en la muestra evaluada en 1998. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que los fumadores están cada vez mejor informados sobre los efectos del tabaco sobre la salud e informan mayo- res problemas por fumar tanto en lo relativo a su salud, como con las personas de su entorno social, a la vez que diferentes relaciones entre las variables medidas que son de interés para el diseño de programas de prevención y tratamiento de la conducta de fumar. Palabras clave: tabaquismo, adquisición, mantenimiento, problemas de salud The present study analyzes several aspects of the smoking habit in two different smokers samples assessed by the same questionnaire with five year of diference. The sample of 1993 was composed by 187 smokers (mean age 34 years old, range 14-84) and the sample of 1998 was composed by 196 smokers (mean age 32 years old, range 17-75). The results shows that the smokers in the 1998 sample are better informed about the effects of smoking over the health and they report more health and social smoking problems related with tobacco use Also, different relatioships between some of the variables may be of interest for programs of prevention and treatment of smoking.
