La nutria en Extremadura

Abstract

Extremadura posee elevados valores de conservación y biodiversidad, aunque una parte importante de su red fluvial está formada por ríos mediterráneos intensamente regulados, con funcionamiento ecológico muy modificado, a lo que se debe añadir el reciente aumento de la superficie de regadío. A pesar de ello, en el muestreo de 2005 la nutria apareció en el 91,3% de las localidades muestreadas en esta comunidad autónoma. Además, entre 1985 y 2005 su distribución se incrementó un 32%. Los pocos lugares sin indicios de nutria fueron cabeceras, hábitats pobres para el mustélido por su escasa disponibilidad trófica y de refugio. La probabilidad de encontrar indicios de nutria y la intensidad de marcaje con heces aumentaron aguas abajo, teniendo ambos factores valores máximos en los embalses. El cangrejo rojo americano (Procambarus clarkii) fue una presa básica para la nutria en Extremadura. La depredación sobre esta especie de cangrejo, unida a mejoras en la calidad del agua, al uso de los embalses y al cese de la persecución directa del mustélido, pueden ser los responsables del aumento observado en la distribución de la nutria durante este último muestreo.
