El reconocimiento de la libertad de imprenta es uno de los grandes logros de la Constitución de 1812, lo que supuso la derogación de la censura y con ello la posibilidad de publicar toda clase de escritos sin necesidad de controles previos. No obstante, esa libertad de prensa se limita al orden político, ya que continúa subsistiendo la censura previa para los escritos religiosos y con ello la exigencia de responsabilidad penal (particularmente rigurosa) para quien publique sin la autorización de la Iglesia, lo cual se hace difícilmente comprensible en unas Cortes liberales que pretendieron poner fin al absolutismo del Antiguo Régimen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
