Scholars such as Merkelbach or Kerényi have tried to show that Greek romances must be read as iniciatic texts of Isis, Helios or Eros worship. Nowadays, such interpretations cannot be held, although the importance of religion in the genre is still recognised. In this sense, this paper tries to determine the meaning of the fact that the two main protagonists in two of the preserved romances are priestesses of the goddess Artemis, as well as the narratological function of that circumstance in the romances.
