Abstract

In recent years a model focused on the development of strengths during adolescence has emerged. According to this approach, a healthy and adjusted adolescence and an adequate transition to adulthood require more than avoiding risk behaviours. Thus, a perspective focused on wellbeing is adopted, emphasizing the existence of healthy conditions and expanding the concept of health to include the skills, behaviours and competencies necessary to be successful in social, academic and professional life. From the Positive Youth Development (PYD) model by Lerner et al. (2011), five strengths (5C’s) are presented, i.e., competence, confidence, connection, character and caring. If all 5C's are satisfied, a sixth competence arises, which is the contribution, understood as the contribution to oneself, to the family and to the community. This report shows the data from the Spanish study, collected in 2017, included in the "Positive Youth Development Cross-national Project" (Wiium, 2018). A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with a sample of 768 Spanish young people (60.5% women) aged between 17 and 29 years old (M = 19.50, SD = 2.27), who were enrolled in 10 educational centres (high schools and universities) in Andalusia (Southern Spain). This report presents descriptive data on the 5C’s of PYD, social contribution, developmental assets, school adjustment, healthy lifestyles, risk behaviours and psychological adjustment.
