Within the classicistic system of Spanish Literature, this article studies the trajectory of dialogue as a literary genre since its transformation during the 1530's. Upon review of the updated scholarship about the topic, it is essential to consider, in combination with the genre's medieval precedents, its imitatio of Greco-Latin literary models in relation to a European background of rising vernacular languages. As part of the 'ancients-and-moderns' tradition, Renaissance dialogue writers followed a series of models --Platonic, Ciceronian, and Lucianesque-- in order to reframe this classicistic genre in the national context of Spanish literature
