El origen de este artículo es una ponencia presentada en Rabat, bajo auspicio del United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, sobre indicadores de desarrollo. El tiempo se presenta como un recurso escaso susceptible de usos alternativos. Esta ponencia y otras similares, contribuyeron a formar la corriente de pensamiento que facilitó que la Conferencia de Naciones Unidas sobre la Mujer (Beijing, 1995) propusiera en su Plataforma de Acción una innovación en el marco de análisis macroeconómico, con un sistema de cuentas nacionales que incluyese el trabajo no remunerado.
