Abstract

Hace un siglo, la España de Alfonso XIII, de Antonio Maura y Jacinto Benavente, celebró el IV centenario del Descubrimiento del Mar del Sur mediante una Exposición documental y cartográfica Americana, inaugurada el 19 de diciembre de 1913 en el Archivo General de Indias, en Sevilla, y un Congreso de Historia y Geografía Hispano-Americanas, celebrado también en la capital hispalense entre el 26 de abril y 1 de mayo del año siguiente. Aunque no fueron los únicos actos para recordar el avistamiento del Mar del Sur por el extremeño Vasco Núñez de Balboa en 1513 desde la costa panameña, sí fueron los más trascendentales por su carácter oficial y por la importancia de las personalidades y los materiales exhibidos en el gran depósito americanista
