A pesar de los adelantos técnicos, navales y de sanidad, cerca de setecientas naves y varios miles de vidas se perdieron en la carrera de Indias durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Muchos otros se vieron en peligro de zozobrar, aunque lograron llegar a tierra con barcos casi destrozados y numerosas bajas. Todo ello nos habla de la peligrosidad del viaje y explica, además, el miedo de los pasajeros a emplear este medio de transporte, desgraciadamente el único para comunicar los vastos dominios ultramarinos del Imperio Hispánico
