Abstract

Las fibras minerales artificiales (FMA) han sido manufacturadas y utilizadas por la industria desde hace muchas décadas. Incluyen basicamente tres grupos principales: lanas de aislamiento. filamentos continuos y las fibras cerámicas para actividades muy especializadas. La numerosa experiencia clinicoepidemiológica y experimental acumulada en la bibliografía médica respecto a la exposición laboral por inhalación a diferentes variedades de amianto y la aparición tardía de mesotelioma pleural (MP), carcinoma broncogénico (CH) y enfermedad pulmonar intersticial difusa (asbestosis), ha suscitado gran interés y una llamada de atención sobre los riesgos potenciales que para la salud pudieran derivarse del uso industrial de las FMA. En este sentido han sido publicados numerosos estudios sobre el riesgo potencial, a largo plazo, de las FMA, en grupos de trabajadores en zonas de manufacturación,,y utilización, con la finalidad de intentar aclarar su posible inocuidad. o los posibles efectos nocivos en la línea de los conocidos para el amianto principalmente. CH y MP.
