Control of avocado white root rot by combined chemical and biological methods

Abstract

[EN] In order to reduce the amount of fungicide needed to perform an effective chemical control of white root rot (WRR) of avocado caused by Rosellinia necatrix, the in vivo effect of the combination of two control methods (chemical using the contact fungicide Fluazinam and biological by the application of isolates of Trichoderma with biocontrol capacity), which are effective in the control of the WRR when applied alone, has been studied. The results on avocado plants (cv. Topa-Topa), previously individually inoculated with three Trichoderma isolates and then with four isolates of the pathogen with medium-high virulence tested, partially reduced the development of the disease, and additionally, their combination with Fluazinam, completely inhibited the WRR. The combination with the fungicide also increased the substrate colonization by two of the three Trichoderma isolates tested and allowed a high colonization of the rhizoplane of avocado plants by the third Trichoderma isolate. We can conclude that a successful combination of Fluazinam with Trichoderma, has been obtained, suggesting further testing at lower doses (<0.05%) of the fungicide in combination with the antagonist that allow an effective control of the disease. The effect of fungicide on the Trichoderma isolates colonizing the rhizosphere and rhizoplane of avocado plants has also been demonstrated.
