Abstract

[EN] The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (C.S.I.C.) (Higher Council for Scientific Research) was created in 1939 from the former Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones científicas (Board for the Development of Scientific Studies and Research. It is the Spanish version of the great state research organisations, such as the Russian Academy of Sciences, or the French C.N.R.S. As in the two examples quoted, Prehistory had a individualized personality from very early on within the Humanities area of the organisation. In 1938 the Instituto Español de Prehistoria del C.S.I.C. (I .E.P.) (the Spanish Institute of Prehistory) of the C.S.I.C. was created and it was the first State organisation occupied completely with prehistorical research, and a forerunner of the present Department of Prehistory of the Centro de Estudios Históricos (C.E.H.) (Centre for Historical Studies). The I.E.P. originated in the Prehistory section of the Instituto Rodrigo Caro de Arqueología y Prehistoria (Rodrigo Caro Institute of Archaeology and Prehistory), created in its turn, in 1971, from the Instituto Diego Velazquez de Historia del Arte (Diego Velázquez Institute of History of Art). The system of creating institutes is very representative of the development of Archaeology in our country.
