Incendios forestales: ¿desastre o biodiversidad?

Abstract

Los recientes estudios paleoecológicos y evolutivos su gieren que los incendios son un proceso natural en muchos ecosistemas, incluidos ecosistemas Mediterráneos y de Canarias. Estos estu dios sugieren que parte de nuestra diversidad está determinada por la historia milenaria de incendios. Sin embargo, el gran número y extensión de los incendios en los últimos años hace pensar que estos podrías ser un desastre para nuestros paisajes y ecosistemas. En esta charla se pretende analiz ar con detalle estos dos aspectos aparentemente antagónicos de los incendios. En primer lugar se repasan las evidencias y los procesos evolutivos por los que los incendios forestales pueden llegar a ser una fuente de innovacion es biológicas y por lo tanto, ser generadores de biodiversidad. También se repasan las evid encias por las que los incendios pueden conlle var cambios bruscos en lo s ecosistemas y pérdidas de biodiversidad. No todos los incendios ni todos los ecosiste mas son iguales, y existen regímenes de incendios que pued en ser ecológicament e sostenibles en determinados ecosistemas. Fuera del rang o de régimen histórico, los incendios pueden ser un desastre ecológico. A pesar de que existan regímenes ecológicamente sostenibles, en paisajes dominados por la actividad humana, estos pueden ser insostenib les desde el punto de vi sta socioeconómico. Dado que los incendios son prác ticamente inevitables en ambientes con épocas secas, hemos de aprender a convivir co n ellos, y a moldea rlos en regímenes sostenibles. Los diversos aspectos de cambio global juegan un papel muy importante en determinar el futuro régimen de incen dios y en condicionar en qué medida estos incendios van a ser o no un desastre
