En el Canadá existen unas 300.000 personas a las que el gobierno denomina indios, que en el censo de 1971, suponían el 1,4 por 100 de la población total. De todos ellos, alrededor de un 70 por 100 vive en 2.284 reservas, que ocupan 2483643 hectáreas, lo que equivale a un 0,2 por 100 de la extensión total del Canadá. Las reservas indias están distribuidas únicamente en las zonas sometidas a tratado, es decir, por Quebee, Ontario, Provincias del Atlántico —Nueva Escocia, Nueva Brunswick, Terranova y la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo—, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta y parte de la Columbia Británica. Los inmensos Territorios del Noroeste y del Yukón quedan al margen de este sistema por circunstancias históricas, aunque su población es mayoritariamente indígena.
