Abstract

La herencia de caracteres adquiridos, idea central de Lamarck, que es necesaria para explicar la evolución, va tomando forma. Cada vez más artículos indican que sí, que es posible que los caracteres adquiridos a lo largo de la vida se transmitan a generaciones sucesivas, se hereden. Hemos visto ya muchos casos, por ejemplo, el artículo de Brown-Sequard publicado en The Lancet en 1875, el caso descrito en el artículo titulado “Effect of In Utero and Early-Life Conditions on Adult Health and Disease”, firmado por Peter Gluckman, Mark Hanson, Cyrus Cooper and Kent Thornburg en el número 359 (1) de la revista The New England Journal of Medicine. También los numerosos casos descritos por Otto Landman en sendos artículos en Scientific American y Annual Review of Genetics. Hace ya cinco años que comentábamos un curioso artículo en Nature titulado Too Soon for the rehabilitation of Lamarck, comentario seguido por otro que venía en su apoyo.

La operación de descrédito que el darwinismo ha realizado con la figura de Lamarck es un ejemplo lamentable a tener en cuenta para la historia de la ciencia. Pero la Historia, siempre paciente, permite que el tiempo haga justicia y traiga las aguas a su cauce. No en vano bajo la estatua de Lamarck que se encuentra a la entrada del Jardin des Plantes en Paris se lee esta frase de su hija: La postérité vous admirera. Elle vous vengera, mon père. Ahora, en 2014, ya ha llegado la anunciada posteridad y con ella la hora de que se cumplan estas proféticas palabras de la amante hija.
