Diablos y diabluras en la literatura de secretos

Abstract

Los Libros de secretos constituyen un género de literatura renacentista tan difundido en la época como infravalorado por la historiografía tradicional que lo presentó como subproducto cultural poco prestigioso en la narrativa positivista de la historia del pensamiento científico. Sin embargo, aunque sólo fuera en consideración a su enorme éxito entre los lectores hispanos de los siglos XVI y XVII (fenómeno, por otra parte, común en toda Europa), hace tiempo que debería haber llamado la atención de los historiadores. Desde el de la historia de la ciencia, resulta indudable que el contenido de dichos libros guarda una estrecha relación con las concepciones acerca de la naturaleza, de los seres que la pueblan, de los fenómenos que en ella acontecen, y de las representaciones a que todo ello dio lugar. En esta ocasión, elegimos presentar los libros de secretos más difundidos en la España de la época y el tratamiento que en ellos se otorga a las explicaciones sobre los seres y fenómenos naturales en las que se discute sobre la presencia o ausencia de fuerzas sobrenaturales cuya representación -real o simbólica- se atribuye al diablo.
