Abstract

La mayor parte del conocimiento actual sobre los organismos bentónicos del Mediterráneo se limita al estudio de poblaciones que se encuentran en aguas litorales poco profundas. Los datos relativos a poblaciones ubicadas por debajo de la máxima profundidad a la que se puede llegar utilizando escafandra autónoma son escasos Para superar esta falta de información, se estudió la distribución espacial y la abundancia de dos especies de corales blandos: Alcyonium acaule y Alcyonium palmatum en las comunidades bentónicas del Mediterráneo noroccidental a lo largo de 60 km de costa y en un rango batimétrico que va hasta los 70 metros de profundidad. Para ello se utilizó un conjunto de imágenes obtenidas mediante un vehículo operado remotamente (ROV). Se analizaron un total de 76 transectos de video en los cuales se identificaron un total de 708 colonias. Estas dos especies son genéticamente muy similares pero ecológicamente ocupan zonas con substratos muy diferentes. Se observaron altas concentraciones de A. acaule en áreas directamente expuestas a fuertes corrientes de fondo (valores de densidad máximos de hasta 18 colonias/m2). A. acaule, la especie más abundante en la zona, presentó una distribución en parches altamente asociada a substratos rocosos y inclinados. Por otro lado, se observaron colonias aisladas de A. palmatum en toda el área de estudio (densidades máximas de 2 colonias/m2), a pesar de que su presencia fue mucho más escasa. Los valores de densidad más altos de A. acaule se encontraron por de bajo de la cota batimétrica de los 35 m de profundidad, demostrando la importancia de ampliar los rangos geográficos y batimétricos de los estudios de distribución y densidad de especies bentónicas singulares.
