Razonamiento e inferencia relevante

Abstract

Hay dos enfoques principales de una teoría de racionalidad: el positivo y el negativo. Éste se preocupa de rechazar lo que sea irracional. El positivo se propone estudiar el razonamiento y, en la medida de lo posible, mejorar los patrones o las pautas de nuestro razonamiento práctico. Para el enfoque negativo, la inconsistencia es la más común prueba de irracionalidad. Raras veces se dan cuenta sus heraldos de que hay lógicas alternativas a cuyo tenor pueden venir poseídos por una teoría diferentes tipos de consistencia. Critico el enfoque negativo por dos razones. Una es que hay diferentes tipos de inconsistencia. Las nuevas lógicas nos muestran que la reducción al absurdo casi nunca es absoluta y definitivamente concluyente. Opto por la visión positiva: razonar es inferir; la inferencia es relativa y también lo es el razonamiento. Eso me lleva a juzgar el enfoque relevantista del razonamiento, que sólo admite como genuino razonar aquel que infiera una conclusión de unas premisas únicamente cuando se dé entre ellas un cierto vínculo semántico. Rechazo ese enfoque, pero concedo algo que se aproxima un poco al mismo, sólo que reinterpretado en una perspectiva gradualista.
