L'ébriété à Ougarit et la Bible: un héritage discuté

Abstract

Contrairement à ce qui produit dans la plupart des sociétes modernes,l'ébriété ne possede pas en soi, dans l' Antiquité, de connotations nécessairernent négatives. Ordinairernent, celles-ei se manifestent lorsque l'ordre social paraît menacé par des comportements désordonnés ou excessifs en raison de l'ivresse. Surgissent alors stigmatisation sociale et, en certaines occasions, châtiment. Quand ce n'est pas le cas, l'état de consciente altére par la boisson peut même être encouragé, surtout dans des contextes réglernentés, contrôlés. L'ivresse, en tant qu'état spécial auquel garvient l'individu, peut revetir, en outre, une valeur magique et sacrée, le fait de boire de façon excessive devenant un acte d'une enorme importante culturelle. Curieusement, les bases qui fondent les conceptions négatives du fait de boire reposent pour une grande part sur des préventions anciennes et, dans le cas des sociétés occidentales, s'appuient firialement sur l'ancienne tradition proche-orientale it travers les textes bibliques et la longue histoire de leur interprétation. Ce fait assombrit et dénatuse le rafe que boire et, surtout boire jusqu'à l'ivresse, avait au Levant oriental, dans les cultures de Syrie et de Palestine qui servent de base et de contexte à la documentation fournie par la Bible hébräique.
