Las consultas y juntas de médicos como escenarios de controversia científica y práctica médica en la época de los novatores (1687-1725)

Abstract

En el marco del llamado movimiento "novator", las consultas y juntas de médicos constituyeron un escenario de primera importancia, tanto de la práctica médica como de la controversia científica. El análisis de fuentes manuscritas poco usuales para la época —la correspondencia privada de un médico— ha hecho posible abordar la realidad de la práctica más allá de lo que permiten los textos doctrinales o preceptivos. Se diferencia entre consultas y juntas, atendiendo al sujeto que tomaba la iniciativa de llevar a cabo una u otra modalidad. Las consultas nacían de la dificultad práctica del médico ante un caso que decidía someter al juicio de otros, por lo general de mayor experiencia y jerarquía. Las juntas, en cambio, nacían de la iniciativa del paciente. En ellas, se dirimían muchas cosas: conflictos institucionales, expectativas y rivalidades profesionales; pero también se hacía presente y activa la voz del paciente y sus próximos; y, finalmente, era el lugar donde entraban en pugna más viva las diferentes concepciones médicas acerca del cuerpo humano y sus enfermedades.

Medical consultations (consultas) and meetings (juntas) represented an important aspects of both medical practice and doctrinal discussions. The analysis of manuscipt sources, rarely used in early modern period, reveals the reality of medical practice more accurately than the doctrinal or normative texts.
