La depredación se considera como la mayor fuerza selectiva para que evolucionen algunas características del comportamiento animal. La razón de esta importancia radica en que cualquier fallo al evitar a un depredador puede saldarse con la muerte del individuo, lo que anula sus posibilidades de reproducción futura. Sin embargo, la selección natural favorece las adaptaciones que permiten a los individuos minimizar el riesgo de morir y atender otras demandas de forma simultánea y satisfactoria. Los animales deben resolver este conflicto con flexibilidad, han de adoptar en cada momento la mejor decisión de comportamiento, basándose tanto en su estima del nivel de riesgo de depredación como en los costes y beneficios asociados a las distintas opciones.
