En Galicia se cultivan variedades de maíz comprendidas entre los ciclos 200 y 600 de maduración FAO, siendo los ciclos 300-400 los más comunes. Variedades más tardías se recogen con una humedad en grano muy elevada que impide su correcta conservación Por esta razón, fuentes de germoplasma que por sus características (calidad, resistencia a estreses, tipos especiales de maíz) podrían ser muy interesantes, deben ser mejoradas por adaptación como paso previo a su cultivo en Galicia.
