Abstract

[ES] Mabuya croizati Horton, 1973, es una especie de Scincidae endémica del Macizo del Turimiquire, en el tramo oriental de la Cordillera de la Costa, al Norte de Venezuela. Su descripción original, basada en cuatro especímenes procedentes de “Elvecia” y “Mt. Turimiquire”, es poco detallada. Actualmente, las muestras de M. croizati disponibles en museos venezolanos son escasas y su ecología y biología son poco conocidas. Presentamos una descripción detallada de la folidosis de M. croizati, basada en especímenes observados y capturados en el campo durante inventarios herpetológicos de las cumbres occidentales del Macizo del Turimiquire (1999-2004). Revisamos la distribución geográfica y describimos aspectos generales de su historia natural (presas, ritmos de actividad, reproducción y depredadores potenciales). Mabuya croizati se diferencia de sus congéneres presentes en Venezuela por tener escamas frontoparientales fusionadas, un par de escamas prefrontales, 3-4 hileras de escamas nucales y por tener tres líneas pardas dorsales. Los especímenes de este trabajo proceden de la primera población conocida de la especie en el estado Anzoátegui. Nuestros resultados indican que M. croizati es una especie vivípara, de hábitos diurnos, rupícolas y heliófilos. Por su distribución restringida y la creciente degradación y pérdida de su hábitat, sugerimos que esta especie sea incluida en la categoría de “Vulnerable” de la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza

[EN] Mabuya croizati Horton, 1973, is a scincid lizard endemic to the Turimiquire Massif, eastern Cordillera de la Costa, in northern Venezuela. The original description, based on four specimens from “Elvecia” and “Mt. Turimiquire”, provides little information about the species. At present, samples of M. croizati in Venezuelan collections are scarce and the biology and ecology of the species are poorly known. We provide a detailed description of folidosis characters in M. croizati, based on specimens observed and collected in the field during herpetological surveys in the Turimiquire Massif (1999-2004). We reviewed the geographic distribution of the species and describe general aspects of its natural history (preys, activity rhythms, reproduction, and potential predators). Mabuya croizati can be distinguished from its congener species in Venezuela by the presence of fused frontopariental scales, one pair of prefrontal scales, 3-4 rows of nucal scales and three dark brown dorsal lines. Specimens here described were collected in the first population reported for the state of Anzoátegui. Our results indicate that M. croizati is a viviparous species with diurnal, rock-dwelling and heliophylous habits. Due to its restricted distribution and increasing habitat loss and degradation throughout its range, we suggest its inclusion in the IUCN’s Red List as “Vulnerable”
